Southern California isn't the first place we think of when it comes to barbecue — but that doesn't mean it doesn't have any worth eating. In fact, Phil's BBQ is considered by many to be one of the country's top spots to pick up some mesquite grilled baby back and beef ribs, chicken and sandwiches. Of particular note is the El Toro sandwich, a stack of char-grilled, deli-sliced tri-tip topped with BBQ sauce that's worth a stop all by itself. And while the oft-cramped original location has been replaced with a larger space in Point Loma, the lines persist, both there and in San Marcos and Santee. [Scouted by Garrick]
