The Hana Highway is commonly touted as one of the most incredible drives in the world — but it doesn't make it any less true. Stretching 68 miles from the city of Kahului to the small town of Hana on the island's east side, this picturesque road winds along cliffs by the edge of the ocean, past many waterfalls and hiking trails, and through lush tropical rainforest. While it's not all that lengthy, it typically takes at least two and a half hours to drive — without making stops — thanks to over 600 curves, many of them blind and of the 10 mph-or-less variety, and 59 bridges, 46 of which are only one lane wide. If you want to make the most of it, take our advice and stay in Hana overnight — making a there-and-back trip in one day is doable, but it's also known to cause extreme carsickness, grumpiness, and other maladies you'd rather avoid when on vacation.
