It might not be the biggest or best-known music festival in the country, but historically, the Newport Folk Festival has been one of the more important. Held every year since 1959, the festival has played host to the first national appearance of Bob Dylan in 1963 — he appeared as a guest of Joan Baez — as well as famous sets from the likes of Johnny Cash, Howlin' Wolf, Kirs Kristofferson, and even The Pixies. This year, the festival runs from July 26-28 in Fort Adams State Park and carries on the tradition with a lineup that includes Feist, The Avett Brothers, Beck, The Lumineers, Amanda Palmer, Phosphorescent, and many more.
