One thing about going really fast — you typically need a lot of room to do it safely. And a desolated stretch of salt pan in Utah sounds like just the place. The World of Speed is a multi-day racing event held on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats every year in September, with the goal not to be the fastest up to a certain speed, but to be the fastest, period. Open to the public, the event sees vehicles of all kinds — motorcycles, streamliners, and everything in between — try to hit their fastest times, with world records regularly at speeds ranging from under 100 mph to over 400. Plenty of nearby hotels — including a trio of casinos — make sure you have a place to stay once the racing is done for the day.
