In some locales, being the oldest continually operated public market for fresh food wouldn't mean all that much. But when you're talking about our nation's capitol, it carries a little more weight. Situated in Capitol Hill, the Eastern Market is the place to come in DC for fresh food. Apart from the merchants offering produce, meats, cheese, baked goods, and other edibles, you'll also find stands offering ready-to-eat meals, fresh flowers, and, on the weekends, an outdoor area filled with local farmers selling their produce and local artists selling arts, crafts, and antiques. And don't worry if you don't live in the neighborhood — the market has its own Metro stop.
