Cadillac Ranch

Amarillo, Texas

Judging by the name, Cadillac Ranch could likely be a sprawling cattle-filled farm — but in fact, it's not a ranch, farm, or business at all. Created in 1974 by artists Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels, it's actually a public art installation and sculpture situated on I-40. It consists of a number of old Cadillac cars, representing the changes in the lineup from 1949 to 1963, each half-buried nose-first in the ground at an angle specifically corresponding to the Great Pyramid of Giza. While it sits on private land, visitors are encouraged to get close-up, and even add to the layers of graffiti if they like, making it one of the more unique stops on Route 66.
